Daarom hier even de teksten:

The Monolith Death Cult:
1917 - Spring Offensive
Dulce et Decorum est

Plodding on through the sucking grey mud
The carnage fought, oozed by trench war clay
That in springs past sprung not a single bud
For fear of more death or total dismay

Though shells may plow clean the fields
Burning the crops and mauling the mud
The wind brings only death from a vat
Fertile by cold blood a young man yields
Innocent yet mangled in gruesome combat
Spewing blackest bile the gas claims one more
Cold death comes creeping through the trench
If not by shells maimed or crazied long before

A cloud of mustard takes half of those deployed
Ghastly faces peer back in black or hues of grey
The grandiose arrogance, victory as agony intent
Lifeless by the commanders that them did betray

The mindrape of the spectacle of dehumanization
Viral god wields his festering scythe of gangrene
By endless flashes of mortar or the cadaveric stench
Ghostly faces peer through the veil of celluloid

“Creeping like a snake from a can
The slithering stench of yellow death
Chemical flame of decay
Burning skin and intestine
Regurgitating the bloody guts
Spewing last life from a wretched soul
Live for life, kill for all that is wrong
he drags himself to safety”

Death in the Perimeter
Where furious endearment once was cradled,
crippled by crossfire, but firm of will
Live for life, kill for all that is wrong
he drags himself to safety,
Death in the Perimeter
The need to bleed to gain a yard of mud

Plodding on through the sucking grey mud
The carnage fought, oozed by trench war clay
That in springs past sprung not a single bud
For fear of more death or total dismay

Burning holes in his battered back
Eyes and mind leaning on the fair horizon
but his heart drowning in trench war clay
Fertile by cold blood a young man yields
Shredded by barbed wire
screaming shrapnel, incandescent hail

Iron Maiden - Passchendaele

In a foreign field he lay
lonely soldier unknown grave
on his dying words he prays
tell the world of Passchendaele

Relive all that he's been through
last communion of his soul
rust your bullets with his tears
let me tell you 'bout his years

Laying low in a blood filled trench
killing time 'til my very own death
on my face I can feel the falling rain
never see my friends again
in the smoke, in the mud and lead
smell of fear and feeling of dread
soon be time to go over the wall
rapid fire and the end of us all

Whistles, shouts and more gun fire
lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire
battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb
be reunited with my dead friends soon
many soldiers eighteen years
drown in mud, no more tears
surely a war no one can win
killing time about to begin

Home, far away. From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away. But the war, no chance to live again

The bodies of ours and our foes
the sea of death it overflows
in no man's land God only knows
into jaws of death we go...

Crucified as if on a cross
allied troops, they mourn their loss
German war propaganda machine
such before has never been seen
swear I heard the angels cry
pray to God no more may die
so that people know the truth
tell the tale of Passchendaele

Cruelty has a human heart
everyman does play his part
terror of the men we kill
the human heart is hungry still

I stand my ground for the very last time
gun is ready as I stand in line
nervous wait for the whistle to blow
rush of blood and over we go...

Blood is falling like the rain
its crimson cloak unveils again
the sound of guns can't hide their shame
and so we die in Passchendaele

Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire
running straight at cannon fire
running blind as I hold my breath
say a prayer symphony of death
as we charge the enemy lines
a burst of fire and we go down
I choke a cry but no one hears
feel the blood go down my throat

Home, far away. From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away. But the war, no chance to live again
Home, far away. From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away. But the war, no chance to live again

See my spirit on the wind
across the lines beyond the hill
friend and foe will meet again
those who died at Passchendaele

Motorhead-1916

1916
16 years old when I went to war,
To fight for a land fit for heroes,
God on my side, and a gun in my hand,
Counting my days down to zero,
And I marched and I fought and I bled
And I died & I never did get any older,
But I knew at the time, That a year in the line,
Is a long enough life for a soldier,
We all volunteered,
And we wrote down our names,
And we added two years to our ages,
Eager for life and ahead of the game,
Ready for history's pages,
And we fought and we brawled
And we whored 'til we stood,
Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder,
A thirst for the Hun,
We were food for the gun,and that's
What you are when you're soldiers,
I heard my friend cry,
And he sank to his knees, coughing blood
As he screamed for his mother
And I tell by his, side,
And that's how we died,
Clinging like kids to each other,
And I lay in the mud
And the guts and the blood,
And I wept as his body grew colder,
And I called for my mother
And she never came,
Though it wasn't my fault
And I wasn't to blame,
The day not half over
And ten thousand slain,and now
There's nobody remembers our names Í
And that's how it is for a soldier.

Tom, het zal je verbazen hoeveel metalbands over WO1 zingen.

Valt "One" van Metallica daar ook onder? De tekst is erg algemeen, maar de videoclip was juist wel erg WWI-gericht.

I can't remember anything
can't tell if this is true or dream
deep down inside I feel to scream
this terrible silence stops me

now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
that there's not much left of me
nothing is real but pain now

hold my breath as I wish for death
oh please God, wake me

back in the womb it's much too real
in pumps life that I must feel
but can't look forward to reveal
look to the time when I'll live

fed through the tube that sticks in me
just like a wartime novelty
tied to machines that make me be
cut this life off from me

hold my breath as I wish for death
oh please God, wake me

now the world is gone I'm just one
oh God, help me hold my breath as I wish for death

darkness imprisoning me
all that I see
absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
trapped in myself
body my holding cell

landmine has taken my sight
taken my speech
taken my hearing
taken my arms
taken my legs
taken my soul
left me with life in hell

One (Hetfield/Ulrich)
The song "One" was the third single release of the "... And Justice For All" album. The song was Metallica first nomination for a Grammy award.

Album:
... And Justice For All

The song live:
Before Metallica's live performance of "One" there's always a lot of firework on stage. There's one more big explosion right after James is singing 'landmine'. Since its release it has always been a fixed part of Metallica's live show.

The Best Solos Ever Reader's Choice:
The solo of "One" reached the 7th place in the "100 Best Solos Ever Reader's Choice" in the September 1998 issue of Guitar World.

The "One" demo:
The original demo of "One" was recorded on Jaymz's 4-track right after they wrote the song in the second week of November '87. The demo is just played with guitars, drums, vocals and Kirk setting in with the same last solo is it appears on "...And Justice For All" after he'd only heard the song on the day before. The refrain is occasionally just hummed. On the demo is no bass.

The "One" video:
"One" is Metallica's first video ever. It has been shot on December 6th 1988 in a Los Angeles warehouse.

The movie clips in the "One" video:
They are from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" which is based upon the book by Dalton Trumbo who also directed the movie in 1971. The movie is about a soldier who's arms and legs were blown away by a grenade during World War I. Metallica purchased the rights to this film to use it for the music video.

The three "One" videos:
1. Normal version:
- shows the band playing the song and the clips from the movie.
2. The shorten version:
- It shows the same like the normal version, but the video is shorter.
3. Band version:
- Shows only the band playing the song without the clips of the movie.

The single:
The single release of "One" peaked at #35 on the U.S. charts on April 9th in 1989 and on August 18 the "One" single was even certified platinum.

Metallica's first Grammy performance:
Metallica performed "One" at the Grammy Awards in 1989. They were nominated for a Grammy for the "...And Justice For All" album and the "One" single, but lost to Jethro Tull.

The intro:
In the intro there can be heard machine gun fire, explosions and a yelling soldier which all represents a war scene. In the end of the intro there can be heard a fading sound of a helicopter. The sound of the machine gun fire seems to arise again in the instrumental parts - replaced by the drums and guitars.

The inspiration:
James has been inspired by Dalton Trumbo's book/movie "Johnny Got His Gun". The idea for the song's opening riff originates from a Venom song called "Buried Alive".

The subject matter:
James' reason for writing the lyrics was the thought of beeing cut off from the outside world just like the main character of Dalton Trumbo's book/movie "Johnny Got His Gun".

Metallica about "One"
Kirk Hammett: I used a Mesa-Boogie power-amp, an '88 preamp and an Aphex paramatric EQ on this album. We wanted a clean guitar sound fo "One". The first solo went fine, but I had trouble with the second; I just couldn't nail it. I only had eight days to record all my leads because we were heading out on the "Monsters of Rock" tour. As a result, I was never happy with what was on record, and I flew to the Hit factory in New York between gigs to patch up the solos. I did the third solo in a couple of hours. I worked out the first right-hand tapping thing and from there it flowed very well. I think it worked because I was so pissed off that the second solo wasn't working out. When I had to play that live, it didn't feel right because it was so clean. So I started playing it in full volume with full distortion on my neck pick-up, and like it better. In retrospect, I think I should have played it that way on the album.

James Hetfield: I had been fiddling around with that A-G modulation for a long time. The idea for the opening came from a Venom song called "Buried Alive". The kick drum machine-gun part near the end wasn't written with the war lyrics in mind, it just came out that way. We started that album with Mike Clink as producer. He didn't work out so well, so we got Flemming [Rassmussen] to come over and save our asses. (source: GuitarWorld issue of '91)

Deze ook of niet?

Cranberries
Zombie

Another head hangs lowly
Child is slowly taken
And the violence caused such silence
Who are we mistaken?

But you see? it's not me,
It's not my family
In your head, in your
head they are fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head
In your head
they are cryin'
In your head
In your head
Zombie, Zombie, Zombie
What's in your head, in your head
Zombie Zombie Zombie

Another mother's breakin'
Heart is taking over
The violence causes silence
We must be mistaken
It's the same old theme since 1916
In your head, In your head
they're still fightin'
With their tanks and their bombs
And their bombs and their guns
In your head, In your head
They are dying

In your head, in your head
Zombie, Zombie, Zombie
What's in your head, in your head
Zombie, Zombie, Zombie

Lyrics from "A Children's Crusade" by Sting

Young men, soldiers, Nineteen Fourteen
Marching through countries they'd never seen
Virgins with rifles, a game of charades
All for a Children's Crusade

Pawns in the game are not victims of chance
Strewn on the fields of Belgium and France
Poppies for young men, death's bitter trade
All of those young lives betrayed

The children of England would never be slaves
They're trapped on the wire and dying in waves
The flower of England face down in the mud
And stained in the blood of a whole generation

Corpulent generals safe behind lines
History's lessons drowned in red wine
Poppies for young men, death's bitter trade
All of those young lives betrayed
All for a Children's Crusade

The children of England would never be slaves
They're trapped on the wire and dying in waves
The flower of England face down in the mud
And stained in the blood of a whole generation

Midnight in Soho, Nineteen Eighty-four
Fixing in doorways, opium slaves
Poppies for young men, such bitter trade
All of those young lives betrayed
All for a Children's Crusade

Uit de laatste cd van Dropkick Murphys :

The green fields of France.................pakkend nummer hoor !!!!!!!

oh how do you do, young willy mcbride
do you mind if i sit here down by your graveside
and rest for a while in the warm summer sun
i've been walking all day, and im nearly done
and i see by your gravestone you were only nineteen
when you joined the great fallen in 1916
well i hope you died quick
and i hope you died clean
oh willy mcbride, was is it slow and obscene

[Chorus]
did they beat the drums slowly
did the play the fife lowly
did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
did the band play the last post and chorus
did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

and did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind
in some loyal heart is your memory enshrined
and though you died back in 1916
to that loyal heart you're forever nineteen
or are you a stranger without even a name
forever enshrined behind some old glass pane
in an old photograph torn, tattered, and stained
and faded to yellow in a brown leather frame

[Chorus]
did they beat the drums slowly
did the play the fife lowly
did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
did the band play the last post and chorus
did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

the sun shining down on these green fields of france
the warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance
the trenches have vanished long under the plow
no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing down
but here in this graveyard that's still no mans land
the countless white crosses in mute witness stand
till' man's blind indifference to his fellow man
and a whole generation were butchered and damned

[Chorus]
did they beat the drums slowly
did the play the fife lowly
did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
did the band play the last post and chorus
did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

and i can't help but wonder oh willy mcbride
do all those who lie here know why they died
did you really believe them when they told you the cause
did you really believe that this war would end wars
well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame
the killing and dying it was all done in vain
oh willy mcbride it all happened again
and again, and again, and again, and again

[Chorus]
did they beat the drums slowly
did the play the fife lowly
did they sound the death march as they lowered you down
did the band play the last post and chorus
did the pipes play the flowers of the forest

Oei, ik heb dit topic nu pas ontdekt... Embarassed

Om het goed te maken een nummertje van de populaire Belgische metalband: Ancient Rites.
Het filmpje is niet officieel en laat beelden zien van Ieper.

Ancient Rites - Ypres

On this site of reflection, you came to me as a ghost
Near this monument of the fallen, where one hears the sad last post

Celebration in the city of Ypres, again a new year was born
Not on this place of eternal silence, where quietly souls mourn
For time did not matter on this site, of the graveless dead
Near the leafless trees, we somehow met

On this site of reflection, you came to me as a ghost
Near this monument of the fallen, where one hears the sad last post

Born in different times, we never knew each other,
Born in different times, we never even met
But on this night when the world celebrates, believe met:
But on this night when the world celebrates, I regret your dead

On this site of reflection, you came to me as a ghost
Near this monument of the fallen, where one hears the sad last post
Thousands of names engraved, poor souls fate did not spare
The night was cold, the wind unkind, still wondering what brought me there

Born in different times, we never even met
But on this night when the world celebrates believe me: I regret your dead

Tragic appearance, your uniform torn, your skin full of dirt
We did not speak, nor laugh or cry, did not utter a single word
We kept an honourable distance, borders of time cannot be crossed
As ther is between the living, who hold on to live at any cost
And the dead, whose lifes and dreams along with their bodies lost
Here you appear, probably a trick of the mind that I might have lost

Niet echt metal, maar toch over WW1:

GoodBooks - Passchendaele

Jack was born towards the end of the 19th century
He married his sweetheart at the age of 23
Shortly before the birth of their first child he answered the call of duty

He carried English bayonets, in an English way
He smoked German cigarettes on Christmas Day
He never made it past 25, he died at Passchendaele
Fighting for the cause in the war to end all wars

His son fell from a Spitfire in 1944
Well Daddy what did you do in the Great War?
And what did we learn the second time round?
Never again
Never again

He carried English bayonets, in an English way
He smoked German cigarettes on Christmas Day
He never made it past 25, he died at Passchendaele
Fighting for the cause in the war to end all wars

(Just keep on fighting, still we keep on fighting)
(Just keep on fighting, still we keep on fighting)
(Just keep on fighting, still we keep on fighting)

He carried English bayonets, in an English way
He smoked German cigarettes on Christmas Day
He never made it past 25, he died at Passchendaele
Fighting for the cause in the war to end all wars

Iron Maiden heeft ook enkele nummers die handelen over de Groote Oorlog, waaronder

"Paschendale"

In a foreign field he lay
Lonely soldier, unknown grave
On his dying words he prays
Tell the world of Paschendale

Relive all that he's been through
Last communion of his soul
Rust your bullets with his tears
Let me tell you 'bout his years

Laying low in a blood filled trench
Kill tim 'til my very own death
On my face I can feel the falling rain
Never see my friends again

In the smoke, in the mud and lead
Smell the fear and the feeling of dread
Soon be time to go over the wall
Rapid fire and the end of us all

Whistles, shouts and more gun fire
Lifeless bodies hang on barbed wire
Battlefield nothing but a bloody tomb
Be reunited with my dead friends soon

Many soldiers eighteen years
Drown in mud, no more tears
Surely a war no-one can win
Killing time about to begin

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again x2

The bodies of ours and our foes
The sea of death it overflows
In no man's land, God only knows
Into jaws of death we go

Crucified as if on a cross
Allied troops they mourn their loss
German war propaganda machine
Such before has never been seen

Swear I heard the angels cry
Pray to god no more may die
So that people know the truth
Tell the tale of Paschendale

Cruelty has a human heart
Every man does play his part
Terror of the men we kill
The human heart is hungry still

I stand my ground for the very last time
Gun is ready as I stand in line
Nervous wait for the whistle to blow
Rush of blood and over we go

Blood is falling like the rain
Its crimson cloak unveils again
The sound of guns can't hide their shame
And so we die on Paschendale

Dodging shrapnel and barbed wire
Running straight at the cannon fire
Running blind as I hold my breath
Say a prayer symphony of death

As we charge the enemy lines
A burst of fire and we go down
I choke a cry but no-one hears
Fell the blood go down my throat

Home, far away
From the war, a chance to live again
Home, far away
But the war, no chance to live again

See my spirit on the wind
Across the lines, beyond the hill
Friend and foe will meet again
Those who died at Paschendale

Nog eentje van Iron Maiden:

"Aftermatch"

Silently to silence fall
in the fields of futile war
Toys of death are spitting lead
Where boys that were our soldiers bled
war horse and war machine

Curse the name of liberty
Marching on as if they should
mix in the dirt our brothers' blood

Chorus:
In the mud and rain
what are we fighting for
Is it worth the pain
Is it worth dying for
Who will take the blame
Why did they make a war
Questions that come again
Should we be fighting at all

Once a ploughman hitched his team
Here he sowed his little dream
Now bodies arms and legs are strewn
Where musterd gas and barbwire bloom
Each moment's like a year
I've nothing left inside for tears
Comrades dead or dying lie
I'm left alone asking why

repeat chorus

After the war
Left feeling no one has won
After the war
What does a soldier become

Tracklist:
1. Under A Darkening Sky
2. Behind Enemy Lines
3. Drowning In Mud
4. No-Man's Land
5. Passiondale
6. Poison Fog
7. Fallen Empires
8. Artifacts Of The Great War
9. No Survivors

Death of War
---------------
Ebbing eyesight in chlorine clouds
stealing away barbed wire shrouds
mowed down in mud by machine gun fire
trapped and strangled in barbed wire
silent nights smashed as big guns fill bodies full of shrapnel
in their crusade to kill
Far away, politicians, glasses of port
meet in a toast to a war they've not fought
Holy fire directed and idly discussed
manufacturing hatred, engineering distrust
trading clarity for confusion,
the ruthless powerlust.
Only one thing in common do leaders share
with those on the battlefield fallen down everywhere
and that is their wine, has good body and it is red
draining away forever like the blood of those dead.

Sabaton - The Price of a Mile
Album: The Art of War

Lyrics:
Throw your soldiers into positions once there is no escape, and they will prefer death to flight.

Hear the sound of the machine gun
Hear it echo in the night
Mortars firing, rains the scene
Scars the fields that once were green
It's a stalemate at the front line
Where the soldiers rest in mud
Rosen houses, all is gone
There's no glory to be won

Know that many men will suffer
know that many men will die
Half a million lives at stake
At the fields of Paschendale
And as night falls the general calls and the battle carries on
I long what is the purpose of it all
What's the price of a mile

Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army on the march
Long way from home, paying the price in young mens lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army in despair
Knee-deep in mud, stuck in the trench with no way out

Thousands of machine guns
Get on firing through the night
Mortars placed and wreck the scene
Guns the fields that once were green
Still a dead-lock at the front line
Where the soldiers die in mud
Rosen, houses since long gone
Still no glory has been won

Know that many men has suffered
Know that many men has died
Six miles of ground has been won
Half a million men are gone
And as the men crawl the general call and the killing carry on
I long what was the purpose of it all
What's the price of a mile

Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army on the march
Long way from home, paying the price in young mens lives
Thousands of feat march to the beat, it's an army in despair
Knee-deep in mud, stuck in the trench with no way out

Young men are dying
They pay the price
Oh how they suffer
So tell me what's the price of a mile

That's the price of a mile

Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army on the march
Long way from home, paying the price in young mens lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat, it's an army in despair
Knee-deep in mud, stuck in the trench with no way out

Sabaton heeft nog meer geschreven over Wo1:

Cliffs of Gallipoli.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCe2Y7iVF8

Hear them whisper,
voices from the other side
Hear them calling
former foes now friends are resting side by side

They will never leave our hearts or fade away
live forever
they were far to you to die in such a way

how many wasted lives
how many dreams did fade away
broken promises
they won't be coming home

Oh mothers wipe your tears
your sons will rest a million years
found their peace at last
as foe turned to friend
and forgive
And they knew they'd die

[Chorus:]
Gallipoli
Left their letters in the sand
Such waste of life
Gallipoli
Dreams of freedom turned to dust

Hell is waiting where the ocean meets the sand
Cliffs of burden
where the soldiers rushed into a certain death

At the shoreline
Blood of heroes stains the land
light a candle
One for each of them who fought and died in vain

There is no enemy
There is no victory
Only boys who lost their lives in the sand
Young men were sacrificed
Their names are carved in stone and kept alive
and forever we will honour the memory of them
And they knew they would die

[Chorus]

Oh mothers wipe your tears
your sons will rest a million years
found their peace at last
as foe turned to friend
and forgive
And they knew they would die

[Chorus]

De Letse band Skyforger heeft een hele cd uitgebracht met als thema Wo1 en dan vooral een hommage aan hun vechtende landgenoten:

Bron: http://skyforger.lv/en/index.php?main_page_id=46&page_type=text

De orginele teksten zijn in het Lets, heb daarom maar even een Engelse vertaling gepakt.

SKYFORGER - "LATVIAN RIFLEMEN" '2000

LATVIAN RIFLEMEN

Riflemen – the loudest scream
Of nation choked for 700 years
The secretly ground knife
That cut ropes to make breathe free

At midnights ghastly and blind
By Veisi, by Iecava, Sloka and Smārde
In the Tīrelis swamps
Pale as ghosts you went to die

Proud Riflemen, you guys from
Latvian meadows and forests

All day and night beside the river Jugla
Mad and black like casted in cast-iron
You stood against the predominance
Of German guardsmen

Dry and thirsty lips
Of dirty Russian streets
You kissed with your blood -
Just for freedom

Guys from Nordeķi
Zvaigžņu and Rēveles streets

I see in the nightly sky
Where clouds are digging the moon
Regiment after regiment comes in the time
Of kingdom to come

They are Riflemen who are no more
And who will never be again
But their everlasting glory
Will keep the nation like burning flag

BATTLE OF PLAKANI, BATTLE OF VEISI

Those were first battles won by Latvian Riflemen on
October 29 and November 23, 1915 which helped to stop the
advance of German army for a while. The first company of the
1st Daugavgrīva Riflemen battalion lead by officer Fridrihs
Briedis defeated four times larger German forces.

In the darkest of nights you were born
The urchins of streets and gutters
But nevertheless you are great
'Cause you were the first who went at dawn
To the battle of Plakani, the battle of Veisi
From small and crooked houses
Along the smiling rivers Misa and Iecava
With the only thought in your mind -
To defend the road to Riga

Battle of Plakani, battle of Veisi
The first one, the shining, the lucky.
Hear, the steps of the battle leading
First company and their leader Briedis
Coming from marshlands pound into eternity...

"Hey, guys, where want you to go now
We know those places, you'd better stay -
Ahead there are only swamps and death!"
But you just laughed for a while and said:
"Hey, chicks not men" –
And crept across the swamp that night
Without stopping
'Cause your hate and tenacity turned
The muddy marsh water into a glimmering floor

But now I say wherever I stand
From Iecava, Jugla and Tīrelis I feel
A strange current flowing inside of me
It makes my heart and muscles rising above
And I scream "Remember Misa and Iecava
Remember all eight your own regiments!"

Battle of Plakani, battle of Veisi
It turned the blood of Riflemen into a legend
Battle of Plakani, battle of Veisi
The first one, the shining and lucky!

THE MARCH OF 1916

In support of the Allies (England and France) the
Russian 12th army got ready for the offensive in March
of 1916. Latvian battalions joined forces with the Russians
units in a battle on an open field near Iecava village.

It is the March of 1916
To the positions near Iecava, where Riga–Bauska road
Through the paths full of snow and mud
The battalions of Latvian Riflemen wade
A fierce battle is waiting for them now
And many will go through fire for the first time
But urchins from Riga rush forward in fight themselves
For they safely believe that the enemy will be put to flight

By the high generals of Czar is decided
In the main assault group shall go
Latvian battalions of Riga and Daugavgrīva
Together with Siberian regiments
Yet in the night of 20th March
They take their places in the first trenches
Time passes in excitementful expectations
Standing in mud or sleeping in wet grenade pits

Till in the half past five of morning
First Russian cannons start to roar
And hurricane fire sets in
92 gun tubes are shooting and German positions
Are boiling like a cauldron
Then Siberians rise for the battle
And order is heard: "Latvians, forward!"

The enemy front is broken already
And many yells loudly "hurrah!"
But Riflemen farther can't reach
German machine-guns start to break their ranks
And there is no way back either
The wall of fire by artillery is built
The Siberians cannot endure – they flee
And Germans then sweep them in piles of corpses
But Latvians still stand!

And only with the dark of night survivors crawl back
The wounded ones moan on the field for a long
From high generals was destined thus
For many to stay in the grenadestorm of March

DEATH ISLAND

From the spring till autumn of 1916 the 2nd and
the 3rd battalions of Latvian Riflemen together with
Russian units were defending small fortifications on
the left bank of the Daugava river – there was the enemy
in front, the river in back and the open, rocky field on
both sides. Germans attacked with poison gas and
Riflemen took a heavy toll therefore the place
had been called – Death Island.

Dark flow the river Daugava
Hard, black waves it rolls
Loud roar of guns
From the other bank is brought

There in the fire field of Death Island
Only bullets sing their songs
And shells filled with poison gas
Take away the breath of man

Yet Riflemen don't weep or wail
Under grenade fire they jolly laugh
For they know that their blood
Is spilled for a right thing

SIX DAYS OF MADNESS

July 16-22, 1916 – six days of the desperate
July battles on an open field at the same
surroundings of the March battles near Ķekava.
1st, 6th and 7th Latvian battalions made for
a battle together with Russian units.

Hot sun of July
Still shines bright
Over the forests and meadows
Where soon in mad assault
Latvian Riflemen will rush

The quiet river Iecava
Still clear flow your water
But soon it will be painted
By the red colour of blood

The light evening wind
Still shakes the leaves of birch trees
Soon under the bare stems of those
The soldiers' graves will be dug

The bright eyes of mine
Still gladly watch this world
But deep inside dark voice whispers-
Soon you must close them for ever

Gray and rainy comes July 16th
Still silence is here, but then at once
Hell will break loose and blood will start flow
For many dreams and hopes the end will come
When mowers of death start mince human bodies

But forward now, no more time for thoughts
Like madman you run over the meadow
Bullets whine all around, the Earth shakes and swings
And falling beside you one calls for his mother

The world spins around with howling
Steel rain is falling from the sky
Mud, trees and soil are flying
And human limbs along with them

In daylight upon an open field
Through barbed wires and machine guns
Under the fire of shrapnels and grenades
The run of Riflemen begins

Assault full of rage
Not to be stooped, yet finally useless
Six days and nights long madness
For one reason only -
To see their own land free
Let hundreds and thousands can live there in peace!

COLONEL BRIEDIS

Fridrihs Briedis (1888-1918) – one of the most
outstanding officers of Latvian Riflemen who became a
legend during his lifetime giving an inspiration to others.

When hard times set in for homeland
You were the first one who stood up
First entered the ranks of Riflemen
The muddy entrenchments became your home

You were the first who rushed
In most bitter battle
With shining officer's sabre in hand
Through fire circles of bullets and grenades

Colonel Briedis – the best example for your soldiers
Courageous they always followed you
Colonel Briedis – your life continues even after your death
Together with ancient chiefs you stand now

Fearless you were staring in the eyes of death
No matter what the history will tell about you
'Cause neither for orders, for Tsar nor for fame
But only for the land of your fathers you fought

And didn't hide behind
The back of your soldiers
'Cause only in whirlwind of most raging battle
You felt yourself really happy

When blood, soil and fire are splashing
When bullet rain drips upon men
When biggest fears must be conquered
The real life begins then for you

IN THE TIRELIS SWAMP

The legendary Christmas battles commenced on December 23,
1916 at surroundings of the Tirelis swamp near Machinegun hill – it
was the largest assault of the Russian 12th army in which Latvian
Riflemen bore the brunt. After week long fights the combat mission
of winning back Machinegun hill was fulfilled, but due to an
inefficient action of Russian generals more than five
thousands of Latvian Riflemen were dead...

Narration: We don't talk about World War I,
we have forgotten about it, forgotten those our friends
who fell then. It seems to me completely wrong...
We didn't defend Czar, no! We did defend our land!
And every place where we fought, where our battle-mates
have stayed, that is unforgettable, sacred place...

The Northwind howls like wounded beast
And turns snowstorm across the swamp
It disturbs the rest of silent shapes
And throws wet snow in their faces

Side by side, hundreds they sleep
And look at the sky with empty eyes
Who will dare to go and tell their mothers
That their sons are destined to stay forever
There in the Tirelis swamp...

In that frosty Christmas morning
Through the sea of barbed wires
Latvian regiments flowed like a great stream
They split up the German front as trifle
United by the burning current of hate

But fighting all day soldiers start losing the strength
- Where are reinforcements, why don't they come?!
And one by one Latvian sons fall
And their regiments bled in snow, storm and frost
There in the Tirelis swamp...

And when the Christmas night comes again
And hungry wolves howl in the swamp
The ground shakes under the heavy steps of soldiers-
They have risen again, for a new fight they call

There in the Tirelis swamp
Where frost and death rules
Where horror, suffering without an end
In snow, storm and frost

"BE LIKE A MAN" *

After the Christmas battles the rest wasn't long for Riflemen,
on the 23rd of January Germans start the offensive to capture
back Machinegun hill recently being lost. Those were the
bloodiest battles in the Riga front at that war.

30 degrees of frost
Machinegun hill forged in ice
Wake up, Riflemen, it gets hard to breathe
Germans send shells of poison gas here
In a hollow sepulchral voice
The first cannon start to roar
And hurricane fire unseen before
Storms over you like whirlwind of death
Universe fills with howling of madness
It seems the end of the world is close
But clench your teeth in burning hate
You must hold out in this corner of Earth

Be like a man
Like a Semigallian warrior
Be like a man
In your heart free from fear

In black mass come German regiments
In silence, with hard and clean-cut features
They must get back Machinegun hill
In blood wash away their shame
The Russian units under their assault
Tremble, rise up and roll back
Hold on, Latvians, you cannot lose your strength
'Cause today you must withstand this battle!

The barrels of rifles get overheated of shooting
Bayonets cut bloody jags in flesh
Every nerve strained to the uttermost limit
Now or never, a man becomes animal

There elsewhere behind clouds the sun shines bright
But over here only frost, horror and death all the time

Be like a man
Like unfailing man of war
You must be like a man
In your heart free from fear

* "Be like a man" – the battle-cry of the 5th Semigallian regiment

IN LIFE'S DARKEST HOUR

Ask a question to your heart
Can you really be able
To tremble not
In the life's darkest hour
Ask a question to your heart
Can it give an answer to you
When you’ll have to stand the biggest pain
Will you be able to endure

Such were Riflemen
Went to die for a cause
And if you ought to
Would you go too?

Can you stop wailing, complaining
And bravely force your way
Through unsurpassable obstacles
Through blades, prickles and thorns
To lay down your life
Give it away as a payment
Let hundreds, thousands of people
Be born for a free future

If you know that you can then stand up
Take weapon, fall into our ranks
Tonight in the most raging battle
You shall go to lay down your life

Cobble-stones rattle in joint time of heavy footsteps
Latvian regiments go away in night
"Hey, guys, just wait for a while
I want to go along with you too!"

God Dethroned - Behind Enemy Lines
The march has come to a hold
From victory to disaster
Massive assault but your enemy runs faster
Attacking in waves, still no one returns
Battalions die in demise
It's time to get behind enemy lines

Behind enemy lines

A battalion on top of the hill
With a grand view it's an easy kill
A big dense cloud of smoke fills the sky
Blown into oblivion
The effort was big, the tunnel was long
It was worth the work and the enemy's gone
We finally marched on, then the first tanks came rolling in

Fear is in your eyes
Another bloody curse
Crushed by a fucking tank

Chaos in your mind
Running out of luck
Down the muddy road of extinction

Nothing you can do
Nowhere left to hide
The bloody thing spitting hell fire

You want to stay alive
You keep your head low
But the time has come to meet your maker

The march has come to a hold
From victory to disaster
Massive assault but your enemy runs faster
Attacking in waves, still no one returns
Battalions die in demise
It's time to get behind enemy lines

Behind enemy lines

God Dethroned - Drowning In Mud

Your country needs you, so come and join our war
It's fun and takes you places you've never seen before

Dying races colliding on battlefields
Bodies lying around you and rotting in pools
Drowning in mud, your army is stuck
As far as my eyes can see there's misery

Trench wars caused by stalemate
Digging a hole, now it's your home
You wanna leave but you're stuck in the mud
Then there's the rat. He becomes your best friend

Don't stick your head out. The sniper never sleeps
Cannons roar as you storm the enemy

Dying races colliding on battlefields
Bodies lying around you and rotting in pools
Drowning in mud, your army is stuck
As far as my eyes can see there's misery

Drowning in mud

Trying to stay alive
Drowning in mud and die

Trench wars caused by stalemate
Digging a hole, now it's your home
You wanna leave but you're stuck in the mud
Then there's the rat. He becomes your best friend

Don't stick your head out. The sniper never sleeps
Cannons roar as you storm the enemy

Dying races colliding on battlefields
Bodies lying around you and rotting in pools
Drowning in mud, your army is stuck
As far as my eyes can see there's misery

God Dethroned - Fallen Empires

Tales of disaster traveled fast
The ruins of nature, debris of man
The war is over, the cause is lost
Nine million dead

Shellshocked and wounded
Legs lost, arms shattered
False promises, false hopes
Nine million dead

Prisoners of war convoyed to the camps
Now the war is over, you're not going home
Another cold winter lies ahead of you
Death is your reward, prisoner of war

Architects of war
Weary of battle
Fragile alliance
Fallen empires

Prisoners of war convoyed to the camps
Now the war is over, you're not going home
Another cold winter lies ahead of you
Death is your reward, prisoner of war

Architects of war
Weary of battle
Fragile alliance
Fallen empires

Tales of disaster traveled fast
The ruins of nature, debris of man
The war is over, the cause is lost
Nine million dead

Architects of war
Weary of battle
Fragile alliance
Fallen empires

God Dethroned - No Mans Land

The salient is an arc of flame
Machine guns fire in hysteria
Thousands of soldiers die every day
The wounded scream in agony
Witness the last attack of the cavalry
Gunned down and shot to pieces
The artillery created a landscape equal to the moon

Through a storm of steel
Through no man's land
Bullets blow you to kingdom come
No man's land

Only the rats grew fat on attrition
Glutted with the flesh of dead soldiers
Loathsome, bloated creatures
Half blind and big as cats
The morale of the army
Was sinking in the swamps of the salient
Vicious in victory
We're out for war, war to the death

Through a storm of steel
Through no man's land
Bullets blow you to kingdom come
No man's land

Stuck on a bayonet, or shot at dawn
Life expectancy, there is none

Men slipped and slithered
Through bloody soil on the battleground
Divisions were going across like terriers intent on flushing rats from a hole

Through a storm of steel
Through no man's land
Bullets blow you to kingdom come
No man's land

God Dethroned - No Survivors

The sun is dawning on another sea of blood and mud
March against machine guns like lambs being driven to the slaughter
Tornadoes of shrapnel
The wounded sinking in three feet of mud
Dying grotesquely
Wading through the swamp among the carnage

No!!!!!

Our last assault for victory
Shattered by machine gun fire
Bombs rain down in cataracts
Carnival of death

Shellshocked, paralyzed, staring into the gloom
Penalties for desertion
Death the reward for cowardice
Salvos, cannonades, unleashing hysteria of rage
The senselessness of it all grew like a cancer in the minds of the troops

No!!!!

Our last assault for victory
Shattered by machine gun fire
Bombs rain down in cataracts
Carnival of death

No survivors

For weeks I have waited in this mud
I'm shaking, I'm wet
The stench of my dead friends
Relieved when we finally march in
This waiting is killing me
Traumatized eyes, as we go in
Bodies everywhere, the bullets scream
We can't survive but we march in
Nothing to win but I go in
Don't care if this killing is a sin
I just want to end this hell I'm in
I hit the bottom, we did not win

No!!!!

Our last assault for victory
Shattered by machine gun fire
Bombs rain down in cataracts
Carnival of death

No survivor

God Dethroned - Passiondale

Take a shot at glory on the hills of Passiondale
Prepare the artillery to blow away the troops on the other side

Traumatized, entrenched for life
Cannons point at the enemy
Under siege for years and years
We're swept away from the earth

A serenade in lead
For all those who died
Wartime atrocities
No sign of life

No escape from Passiondale

Grenades rain down on our fortress day and night
My brain is numb
I lost all my friends
Will it ever stop
There's no escape, it seems too late
For god and country, we try to endure this living hell

Take a shot at glory on the hills of Passiondale
Prepare the artillery to blow away the troops on the other side

A serenade in lead
For all those who died
Wartime atrocities
No sign of life

God Dethroned - Poison Fog

Dominate, new technologies dominate the war
Exterminate, Overthrow the enemy
Asphyxiate, The call for retribution

Vicious death creeping across the fields
Mustard gas, a deadly hellish fiend
A choking grip is locked around your neck
Vomit blood. Your face turns grey. You are dead

Nauseate. Malicious pain ripping through your lungs
Degenerate. The weary crucifixion
Hallucinate. Inhale, exhale

Feel the wind blow in your direction
Breath of death. Fog thickens the air
No code of honor, you dogs of war
1917, we're gasping for air

I cannot breathe, I cannot see
Poison fog. Poison fog
Inhaling mustard gas. It kills me in my sleep
Poison fog. Poison fog.

Exhaustion, dehydration
The water is foul with decay and excrement and something dead
It's covered with sour mustard gas

As I watched them in bright daylight
When crawling through the poison clouds, I saw them burn away
My name should have been written between theirs on stones
In dreams I still see, hear and smell them every single night

Dominate, new technologies dominate the war
Exterminate, Overthrow the enemy
Asphyxiate, The call for retribution

Feel the wind blow in your direction
Breath of death. Fog thickens the air
No code of honor, you dogs of war
1917, we're gasping for air

I cannot breathe, I cannot see
Poison fog. Poison fog
Inhaling mustard gas. It kills me in my sleep
Poison fog. Poison fog.

Exhaustion, dehydration
The water is foul with decay and excrement and something dead
It's covered with sour mustard gas

God Dethroned - Under A Darkening Sky

Daybreak, cannons fire
Attack a bleeding empire
Their armies they lie in wait
No escape it's too late

Join our army, join our war
Now's the time to settle the score
The war to end all wars

From far they came, from foreign lands
Grim forces marching on
Under a darkening sky

Arch enemy you won't defy
Take no prisoners, take their lives
March into the enemy lands
March, two, three, four

Under a darkening sky

Die
No hope, No glory
Die
No victory
Die
Under a darkening sky

(repeat all verses)

De Nederlandse band God Dethroned brengt binnenkort de cd "Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross" uit. Het is een concept album over wo1.

"GOD DETHRONED singer/guitarist Henri Sattler previously stated about the upcoming CD: "Just like with our two previous albums, we've been recording at Soundlodge with producer Jörg Uken.

"'Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross' is another concept album about World War One. Having done a concept album about this topic before didn't make it an easy job, but reading Ernst Juenger's 'In Stahlgewittern' (Storm of Steel), which is his biography of his daily experiences in the trenches during the war, gave me so much inspiration that I managed to do a good job on the lyrics and I'm really satisfied with the result, but this is, of course, something you will have to check out for yourselves.

"Musically, the new album turned out to be one of the most extreme records we ever did. Nevertheless with the very recognizable GOD DETHRONED hooks present in all the songs. Producer Jörg Uken outdid himself this time, because our new album is, in my opinion, the best-produced album we ever had. Extremely raw, heavy, but crystal clear and super dynamic at the same time."

GOD DETHRONED is:

Henri "T.S.K." Sattler - Vocals, Lead Guitar
Henk "Henke" Zinger - Bass
Michiel "Mike" vd Plicht - Drums
Danny Tunker - Guitar

"Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross" will be released on November 23 (one day earlier internationally) via Metal Blade Records. "

Hun vorige cd was vrij bruut, dus ben benieuwd naar deze cd.

Je was er weer vroeg bij Smile

Ik kom het nu net pas op twitter tegen:
God Dethroned – Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross

ere’s nothing wrong with a healthy work ethic. This is demonstrated by Henri Sattler and his God Dethroned gang with their second instalment of World War One themed albums. Passiondale was released only a year ago and now the band are back with a new album, entitled Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross. Its predecessor is a tough act to follow up on in terms of quality and critical acclaim, but then again Henri Sattler and Co never failed in delivering quality albums. Let’s see how solid their latest album is.

Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross is very much in line with Passiondale, but there are some twists and turns as well. First of all the new material is more layered and complex, making it quite a challenge to get to the essence of this album. Secondly, the band stepped up in terms of technicality and sonic violence, which turns Under The Sign Of The Iron Cross into a very intense listening experience. None of the previous God Dethroned albums are exactly “easy listening” or “middle of the road” music, but this album tops them all in terms of sheer savagery. Songs like Storm Of Steel, Fire Storm, The Killing Is Faceless and Chaos Reigns At Dawn certainly get the point across.

Ik zet het hier maar neer, omdat gitaris Micheal Burston ook mee heeft gewerkt aan het album 1916 van Motörhead.

Vandaag de cd binnen gekregen van Sabaton (the art of war). Hele cd klinkt geweldig.
