National Donut Day Celebrates Compassionate Effort During World War I
Friday is National Donut Day in the U.S.
While most of us might consider it an excuse to indulge in the sweet treat, the day is really meant to honor women who supported U.S. troops during World War I.
The Salvation Army says this is the 76th annual observance of the day, to remember that organizations 'donut lassies' who made the tasty confection for American soldiers.
76th Annual National Donut Day Fun Facts
•National Donut Day was first celebrated in Chicago in 1938. Today, the annual event is commemorated on the first Friday in June.
•National Donut Day commemorates the "donut lassies", female Salvation Army volunteers, who provided writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending, home-cooked meals, and of course, donuts, for soldiers on the front lines.
•Approximately 250 Salvation Army volunteers provided assistance to American soldiers in France during WWI.
•Due to limited resources, these treats were often fried seven at a time in the soldiers' helmets.
