Quote: | Anzacs remembered at Gallipoli
Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman has paid tribute to Turkey for their hospitality each Anzac Day at Gallipoli and for preserving its "sacred sites".
Speaking at the dawn service at Gallipoli on the 98th anniversary of the Anzac troops' ill-fated landings, Dr Coleman said what "began as a profound respect between enemies on the battlefield, evolved into a close, warm relationship between New Zealand and Turkey".
"The Turkish people suffered terrible casualties defending their homeland. Over 87,000 sons of Turkey are known to have fallen here," he said.
"And yet we are welcomed back here every year, with friendship and warmth, to pay our respects to the fallen.
"Thank you for making these commemorations possible, and for preserving these sites, which are sacred to us all."
A crowd of about 5200 mainly Australians and New Zealanders at Gallipoli was down almost 15 per cent on last year as people wait to see if they'll be able to attend the 2015 centenary commemorations via a ballot system.
Some 44,000 allied soldiers died during the Gallipoli campaign, including 8709 Australians and 2721 New Zealanders.
The Anzacs were meant to land on a wide shore with an easy approach inland 1km south of the sheer 60 metre cliffs they actually faced after drifting north.
Turkish troops patrolled the scrub between the Aegean Sea and those cliffs again on Thursday - but unlike 98 years ago they were protecting Australians and New Zealanders as part of the security operation.
Dr Coleman said the events at Gallipoli had a profound influence in shaping New Zealand's national consciousness.
"Because as Australian and New Zealand troops clung desperately to this small peninsula far from home, a deep, enduring friendship was forged, between our countries," he said.
"There is no closer relationship between two nations than that between New Zealand and Australia. The shared experience of Gallipoli will forever be its cornerstone."
