Michael Morpurgo, the author of 'War Horse', will stage a new play at Ypres to mark the centenary of the First World War.

Michael Morpurgo's War Horse was so acclaimed that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh once squeezed past members of the audience at the New London Theatre to take their seats just before the curtain rose.

Now, the children’s author is to make an even more striking tribute to the soldiers who gave their lives in the trenches in the First World War.

Mandrake can disclose that Morpurgo has written an emotional new work focusing on the football match that was played between German and British troops on no man’s land during the brief Christmas Day truce in 1914. Food, cigarettes and souvenirs were exchanged, addresses swapped and Christmas carols sung in unison.

An abridged version of the play will be performed on the battlefield at Ypres on the centenary of the outbreak of the war.

Virginia McKenna, who came to fame with her roles in heroic Second World War films, has already been cast. “When I heard that Michael Morpurgo wanted me for this production, I was so excited,” the star of Born Free tells me. “I jumped at the chance to do it. I think he is a genius. War Horse was simply fantastic, and this new work about the football match is so brilliant.

“To have the opportunity to be part of it at Ypres, where it took place, on the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, where so many men lost their lives, will, I’m sure, be a deeply emotional occasion and one to remember.”

McKenna, 81, who played the SOE agent Violette Szabo in Carve Her Name with Pride and Second Officer Julie Hallam in The Cruel Sea, adds: “We will be doing a version of it during a break in War Horse at the New London Theatre soon, which, again, I am thrilled about.”

Britain declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914. This is the date towards which Morpurgo and his team are working. Other acts of remembrance are also planned, including school trips from all the countries which fought at Ypres, where five battles were fought in which hundreds of thousands of British soldiers were killed.

In January, Sebastian Faulks, who wrote the First World War novel Birdsong, said he resisting pressure to celebrate a military victory in the way the Second World War is remembered.

“This must not be VE Day-like,” the author said. “The tone must be modest, inclusive and reverential of others. Celebration is completely the wrong note, certainly for 2014, although it might be more relevant in 2018. A degree of humility is needed, initially particularly, as this was an avoidable calamity.”

Ik heb geen idee of hij het echt op die plek wil houden, maar vraag me af of in dat geval de boer het toelaat. Het staat daar vol met maïs en dat wordt pas in september geoogst.
