THE Riverstone Schofields RSL stand-to and march past will be led by a small but dedicated history group, which keeps alive the memory of a Sydney-based World War I battalion.

The 18th Battalion history group, which is led by president James Downey, take pride not only in the history but the uniforms and weapons from that era.

The group, based in Riverstone, have members from all over NSW.

“The group was formed some around 12 years ago to make sure that Australia never forgets our WWI heroes,” Mr Downey, 33, of Riverstone, explained.

“Our group portrays the 18th battalion that was formed in Sydney and later served on Gallipoli and in France.

“We have 10 members and dress in replica uniforms identical to that worn by those in the first war.

“We have a range of vehicles, weapons and equipment and have led the dawn service march for the Riverstone Schofields RSL for a number of years.

“Most of the members have direct links with the world wars with my great grandfather being in the first one.”

The group, whose members own and maintain WWI vintage SMLE rifles and even a modified 1916 army truck, regularly feature in movies, TV series and adverts.

They provided the colour and most actors for the well known Legacy advertisement telecast last year.

“We have a lot of fun while preserving a very important piece of Australian history,” Mr Downey said.

He said anyone is free to join their group.
