In March 2018, we were delighted to begin delivery of a highly challenging project. We commenced the 3D scanning of four African Memorials to the Missing, which were built by the Commission to commemorate Africans who died during WW1, and who have no known grave.

These fantastic sculptures feature full-size bronze figures of the various troops & carriers, and are located in Kenya, Tanzania & Nigeria. Due to the unique nature of each of these sculptures, we identified that it was important to hold a permanent digital record of all the memorials, as a way to safeguard this part of the Commissionís heritage estate.

In August, we were subsequently able to use the 3D models, to actually restore the Mombasa African Memorial which had suffered from vandalism. What was most rewarding for the team, was that they were able to tailor the restoration to provide a training opportunity for our Kenyan masons, including tutorials on re-bronzing and use of Lime Mortar in line with the CWGC Conservation policy.

Our team in Kenya also utilised the restoration as a forum to engage local stakeholders by hosting a Conservation Conference. This created closer ties to the local authorities with whom we work very closely, and it also increased awareness of CWGC in the local media, and within the Kenyan conservation sector.

The final 3D Scanning was completed in November 2018, when the team travelled to Nigeria to capture digital images of the Abuja Memorial.
