Police called as garden full of poppies is vandalised a week before Remembrance Day Police have been called after a remembrance garden full of poppies was vandalised over the weekend

A remembrance garden has been vandalised in what has been called an “act of malicious violence.” The incident took place at a memorial garden in Edinburgh between 9am and 12am on Saturday. Wooden crosses and a sign were damaged, and other items were left on the garden.

Poppylegion response Poppyscotland and Legion Scotland released a joint statement on the matter, saying: “When our staff and volunteers arrived for duty yesterday morning they were understandably distressed by what they found. “This is a truly deplorable and disrespectful act of malicious violence which has caused immense upset to countless people. “The Garden and Field of Remembrance is a very special place and thousands of locals and visitors alike spend time reflecting and remembering there each year.” After calling police, staff spent much of the weekend working to restore the site. More than 8,000 poppies per year are planted at the garden, as part of a tribute to those who served or continue to serve in the British armed forces. Police hunt Howdenhall police station’s Inspector Alan Struthers said: “This is a reckless and thoughtless act and we need the public’s help to trace whoever did this. “We have already conducted local inquiries. The gates were locked so the person or persons who did this would’ve had to climb over the fence. Remembrance Day is on 11 November.
