Mature and talented beyond his years, the lively Melburnian was an adrenaline junkie officially credited with 47 aerial victories, but the real figure is probably higher.
"There was one occasion where he'd taken off knowing there was a squadron above him," Nowra Fleet Air Arm manager Terry Hetherington explains.
"He engaged in a battle with 11 other aircraft and came out victorious.
"There are many stories of him going up there, looking for a fight and coming out on top." |
