Only a decade after the Wright Brothers made their historic flight the First World War saw the world's military powers put enormous effort in advancing this new invention for supremacy of the skies.

The flying machines were as varied as they were magnificent and the daring men who flew them became known as Flying Aces as their kills were recorded in a victory leader board. The skills that a military aviator had to possess included dog-fighting, balloon busting, and bombing.

The average service life of a British fighter pilot in the First World War was measured in weeks (c. 50 hours flying time) and even the best pilots found the First World War too long as few survived to tell their tales.
