War Historian Michael Mckernan discusses new archaeology find at Gallipoli
With ANZAC day approaching, an international team of archaeologists have revealed findings of rediscovered tunnels, trenches, dugouts and equipment at Gallipoli.
The finds were made during a two week assessment of a 3.7-square-kilometre section of battlefield in October last year.
The discovery of glass shards left in the trenches has also exposed the drinking habits of the troops on both sides, with the Turkish soldiers having a thirst for beer, while the Allied side preferred rum.
The find also reveals that the Turks lined their trenches with bricks, indicating that they were prepared to be there for a long time.
Military Historian and writer Dr Michael Mckernan spoke with Alex Sloan on Mornings this week about the fascinating find.
